ALAMOSA — The race for state House District 62 will have heavy agricultural roots.
Democrat Donald Valdez, who grew up on a ranch outside La Jara, and Republican Bob Mattive, who farms outside Monte Vista, cruised to easy primary wins Tuesday night.
The two will square off in November for the seat that takes in the San Luis Valley, Huerfano County and Pueblo’s East Side.
Valdez led San Luis attorney Alonzo Olivas Payne 4,244 votes to 1,994 votes with all but Costilla County results unreported at press time.
Valdez, who had never run for office before this election, won all seven of the reporting counties.
Prior to running, he worked for seven years as a soil conservation technician for USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
