Today we celebrated Military Appreciation Day here at the Colorado State Capitol! It is an opportunity for us to thank those who serve in the military, both past and present, protecting the citizens of the State of Colorado and the United States from harms way. On this very special day I am proud to be a co-sponsor of HJR18-1009, which designates the "Donald "Don" Stratton Bridge in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Don Stratton was an exemplary American, serving in the Navy and being present during the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. During the battle he was gravely wounded helping fellow servicemen escape the sinking U.S.S Arizona. Thankfully, Mr. Stratton survived, and after healing from his wounds he went on to serve until the end of World War II, before retiring in 1946. A resident of Colorado Springs, Mr. Stratton is a proud example of the bravery and selfless service to one's country that the State of Colorado is proud to honor. I am grateful to be the one to present this resolution to Mr. Stratton to commemorate his unparalleled service to our country.
